Cristina Beltran, Ph.D., Political Science, Rutgers University, works at the intersection of Latino politics and political theory. She is an associate professor in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University. From 2001 until 2011, she taught in the Political Science Department at Haverford College; in 2013-14, she was a resident member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J. Her publications include The Trouble with Unity: Latino Politics and the Creation of Identity (Oxford University Press, 2010). Spanish Translation: El problema de la unidad: política latina y la creación de identidad, Fondo Editorial Casa de las Américas (La Habana: Cuba), 2012; and “To Wield and Exceed the Law: Mexicans, Migration, and the Dream of Herrenvolk Democracy.” In Trumpism and the Latino Predicament. Hello everyone,

I hope you have all been having a restful and relaxing winter break. It has been a very difficult year for us all, but I am hopeful that we may return to some semblance of normalcy by the year’s end. I am currently working on scheduling our first meeting for the Spring semester, as well as a range of speakers in different areas of law. I will notify you all if there are any updates.

 

There are several legal, legislative, and volunteer opportunities open to college students that I am sharing with you all. I have personally worked at the first three of these offices and can guarantee their value as an experience. 

 

1. Richmond County District Attorney’s Office (Note-check other city DA Offices, as well): 

Internships with our office are a tremendous opportunity to explore your career interests and gain invaluable experience as you continue your high school, college, or graduate school career.

Law School, Graduate School, and College Students may apply to intern with RCDA during the Fall or Spring Semesters or during the Summer. High school students may apply for Summer internships with our Community Partnership Unit.

2. Richmond County Surrogates Court: 

The Surrogate’s Court continually extends summer internships to outstanding students from the Staten Island Community. These young adults have all expressed an interest in a legal career.

For example, past summer internship groups have included high school students, college students and law school students. They attended some of the following Schools/Universities: Staten Island Technical High School, New York University, Monmouth University, Brooklyn Law School, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and Pace University Law School.

Student interns have the opportunity to view Court proceedings, conference cases and then discuss these matters directly with the Surrogate and members of the law department. The interns are also afforded the opportunity to experience the world of a pro-se litigant by working with the Richmond County Surrogate’s Court Help Center. Law School students are also involved with researching and writing decisions on active Court matters. 

Note-there is a possibility this internship will not be available over the summer.

Discover Law is intended for undergraduate students who have completed freshman, sophomore, or junior year, but who will not begin their senior year prior to the end of the program. The Committee on Diversity Pipeline Initiatives and the Office for Diversity and Inclusion of the New York City Bar Association are pleased to invite your students, alumni, and partners interested in law to attend our 12^th Annual LSAT Prep & Law School Conference! This virtual conference will be held on Wednesday, January 13 and Thursday, January 14, 2021!

 

This is a comprehensive conference for students, recent college graduates and anyone interested in pursuing a law degree. We partner with local and national law schools, test prep companies, and pipeline programs to offer attendees a robust overview on preparing for and succeeding in law school. This conference has historically served approximately 275-500 attendees and co-sponsored by over 65 law schools and 12 test prep companies.

 

This year, the program will be held virtually over one and half days. Day one, Wednesday, January 13, 2021, will focus on New York City law schools that offer part-time/evening programs. Day two, Thursday, January 14, 2021 will include panel presentations and a virtual exhibit hall.
