One solution: Invite more talented people of color to consider legal education and a legal career – and support them to make that dream a reality. At the University at Buffalo School of Law, Discover Law is doing just that. This award-winning intensive summer program, now in its eighth year, has given dozens of bright young scholars a taste of law school life and opened their imaginations to careers in the law. For these promising future lawyers, the experience is already paying off. Learn more about the program HERE. Participants will receive a monetary stipend for participation. Through the generosity of campus and community partners, the Discover Law program is at no cost to participants. Preference is given to:  Academically promising underrepresented and first generation college students  Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and above  Favorable consideration will be given to students who can demonstrate a record of academic achievement in spite of economic challenges, social or cultural disadvantages, linguistic barriers, extraordinary family circumstances, or personal responsibilities. Discover Law is intended for undergraduate students who have completed freshman, sophomore, or junior year, but who will not begin their senior year prior to the end of the program. Program dates are May 30, 2021 – June 25, 2021. Participants will receive a monetary stipend for participation. Suk is a professor of sociology, political science, and liberal Studies at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), where she serves as the academic dean overseeing interdisciplinary master's programs. She is also a Florence Rogatz Visiting Professor of Law at Yale Law School. In addition to the book, We the Women: The Unstoppable Mothers of the Equal Rights Amendment, Suk is the author of dozens of law review articles and book chapters. Her research explores the theory, practice, and procedures of reducing inequality in comparative constitutional law, antidiscrimination law, and social policy. She has lectured widely in the United States and Europe and has been a visiting fellow at the European University Institute in Florence and LUISS-Guido Carli in Rome. She has a J.D. from Yale Law School, where she studied on a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans and a D.Phil. in Politics from Oxford University, where she held a Marshall Scholarship. Suk's media commentary and interviews, primarily on the ERA and legal issues affecting women, have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, the American Experience on PBS, CBS News, the Bloomberg Law podcast, and other outlets.  Professor Suk will discuss her recent book, We the Women: The Unstoppable Mothers of the Equal Rights Amendment.

The Penn State Law in University Park, PA Explore Law Program helps to increase underrepresented college students’ access to legal education and law school by providing instruction surrounding the law school admissions process, LSAT preparation, law school classes, and legal career opportunities for J.D.s.

Undergraduate students regardless of undergraduate school, major, or state of residence may apply. College sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are members of groups underrepresented in the practice of law are encouraged to apply, including those who identify as members of a racial or ethnic group underrepresented in the practice of law; identify as having a mental or physical disability; identify as LGBTQ+; or are first-generation college students (parents/guardians did not complete a bachelor’s degree).
