Why do nations go to war?  How do nation-states and international organizations address the threat of international terrorism?  What is the U.N., and how does it work? What are transnational social movements and how do they matter?  This course provides students with the background and conceptual tools necessary for understanding international politics and international relations. Students will learn about competing theories of international relations, and learn how to apply those theories to major events in world history (such as world wars) and pressing contemporary issues in global politics (such as climate change).  (SOCIAL SCIENCE) (cont. wld.). Prerequisites: ENG 151 AND any US Experience in its Diversity course (FUSR). Prerequisites may be waived upon request.  Please Note: This course satisfies the college option.

Free Pre-Law Opportunity at New York Law School This Summer

 

Pre-Law Pipeline Program for Summer 2021 Dear Pre-Law Advisors, The deadline for our Summer Pre-Law Pipeline Program has been extended and expanded to include rising seniors! Please encourage your students interested in law school to send in their applications below by May 7, 2021. Our Summer Pre-Law program is designed to provide students from underrepresented communities with a dedicated set of opportunities to explore the law and create a pathway to earn their J.D. degree at NYLS. Participants in the Summer Pre-Law Program attend courses at NYLS for two consecutive summers if they are a rising Junior, or one summer for rising Seniors. The program is open to rising college juniors and seniors. NYLS works directly with undergraduate partner institutions to identify candidates, and the inaugural class included approximately 25 students. As part of the program, NYLS checks in with participating students throughout their junior and senior years and provides them with law school-related resources. The curriculum, which includes four hours of class per day, four days a week, was developed and taught by NYLS’s faculty. It includes these topics:   Is Studying Law for You? Developing Characteristics of the Successful Law Student Developing Law School Thinking Skills: Thinking about meaning Reading for comprehension Putting your thoughts into words with precision Reasoning by syllogism Reasoning by analogy Introduction to Legal Method Written Legal Communication Professional Development Project-Based Capstone Preparing for the LSAT   The Project-Based Capstone represents the culmination of students’ work during each summer session and will engage students in simulated arguments on behalf of a “client.”  It is free to participate in the Summer Pre-Law Program. The Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). An Overview, with Nolan DeBrowner; Thurs., April 22nd

The CSI Student Government Academic & Curricular Affairs Commission is excited to sponsor a graduate school test prep series on the LSAT and MCAT for all students to attend. The series will feature presentations from test prep experts on the format of each exam, preparation timeline, scoring, tips, resources, and more. Both events will consist of a 30-minute presentation followed by Q&A Session.

The first session will take place on Thursday, April 22nd, from 3 to 4 pm. The speaker is Nolan DeBrowner, CSI class of 2015, Cardozo Law School, class of 2020.

Nolan DeBrowner, CSI, Class of 2015, majored in Political Science. During his college career, he interned at the Richmond County District Attorney's Office, the New York State Assembly under Joe Borelli, a SuperPAC, and at a local political consulting firm. After graduating, Nolan did well on the LSAT and began tutoring students for the test independently and for a number of prep companies. He also worked as a legislative aide for State Assemblyman Matthew Titone. Nolan attended Cardozo Law School on a full tuition scholarship.  He is now an associate at the firm of Weil, Gotchal, and Manges.

Between 1941 and 1943 policemen in Vienna, Austria were ordered by Nazi authorities to guard deportation trains that carried the Roma (“Gypsies”) and the Jews from Austria to concentration and death camps. Most policemen were not Nazis. Why did they comply?

Mark Lewis is Associate Professor of European History at the City University of New York (College of Staten Island and the Graduate Center). He is the author of

“Continuity and Change in the Vienna Police Force, 1914–1945” in the journal Shoah: Intervention. Methods. Documentation (2019-20), The Birth of the New Justice: The Internationalization of Crime and Punishment, 1919- 1950 (OUP, 2016), and Himmler's Jewish Tailor (with Jacob Frank, Syracuse University Press, 2000).
