Free Pipeline Program

Do you know anyone who has always dreamed of going to law school but never had the support or resources?  Maybe a former student or a paralegal at your firm?  Maybe you? Thanks to a generous grant from AccessLex Institute, the Ronald H. Brown Law School Prep Program at St. John’s Law proudly announces a new program dedicated to helping adult learners achieve their dreams: the new Weekend LSAT Boot Camp.  This free program aims to serve working professionals, recent college graduates, and college seniors in the New York City area from historically underrepresented groups who want to pursue a career in the law. Participants will take a comprehensive, customized LSAT prep course and have workshops on the law school admissions process, essays, professionalism, networking, time management, and workplace diversity. There will also be one-on-one mentoring and professional admissions advising and mental and emotional health counseling. The program takes place at St. John’s Law in Queens (8000 Utopia Parkway, Queens, NY 11439).  It begins in late March 2020 and culminates in October 2020 with an event where participants meet one on one with admissions officers from law schools across the country. To date, over 300 Ron Brown Prep Program alumni have attended more than 50 top law schools across the country, including: Harvard; Yale; Boston College; Columbia; Cornell; Fordham; Emory; Georgetown; Howard; NYU; St. John’s; UC Berkeley; UCLA; U of Michigan; and Vanderbilt. The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms around the world. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research and provides consulting services to justice innovators.

In 2015, the Center launched Project Reset, a diversion program that seeks to forge a new response to low-level offending that is proportionate, effective, and humane. Project Reset seeks to hold people accountable for their actions while avoiding the use of incarceration and the potential harms associated with the traditional criminal justice process. The goal is to restore confidence in justice and bolster the legitimacy of law enforcement in the eyes of the public, helping to mend relations between the community and the justice system. Project Reset initially worked only with 16- and 17-year-olds in several precincts in Manhattan and Brooklyn, but its demonstrated impact resulted in its expansion. Today, Project Reset is active in all of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx for people of all ages and will now be launched in Staten Island.

The Staten Island Justice Center is seeking a Community Liaison for Project Reset Staten Island. Reporting to the Program Manager, the Community Liaison is the first and primary point of contact for potential and current participants. The Community Liaison is primarily responsible for conducting initial outreach by phone, preliminary intakes, scheduling, and completion protocols. The Community Liaison will also assist with connecting participants with voluntary community programming and resources. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Determine whether a potential participant is suitable for group-based work or merits additional screening and/or individual counseling with a social worker; 
• Contact potential participants (via the phone and/or mail) to schedule them for programming and conduct an initial intake/screening; 
• Explain program requirements and expectations to participants; 
• Complete rescheduling of services for participants both in-person and on the phone; 
• Contact participants to remind them of upcoming dates/programs and encourage attendance; 
• Maintain organized records of outreach attempts, daily attendance sheets, completion, and other project details; 
• Participate in Project Reset outreach events and meetings involving the NYPD to provide program information and encourage full participation; 
• Work with the clinical team to refer participants to voluntary social services, where appropriate; 
• Maintain accurate enrollment records in the Center's internal electronic case management tool and the Project Reset case processing system shared with project partners; 
• Prepare and circulate certificates of program completion; 
• Assist with group facilitation when needed; 
• Assist with maintaining and updating resource guide; 
• Participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings; 
• Participate and staff evening and weekend community meetings, events and programming, as needed; 
• Maintain partnerships with community-based agencies that provide voluntary services to participants; 
• Assist with other Staten Island Justice Center intakes, screenings, and other related tasks, as needed; 
• Attend all staff meetings and trainings and assist with the Staten Island Justice Center’s events after hours, as needed;
• Assist with other relevant tasks, as necessary.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have an Associate’s degree or 3 years of experience as an intake specialist or experience in a similar role.  Candidate must be highly organized with a strong commitment to systems and process. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written are a must. Must have an experience or an interest in group facilitation. Must be able to provide service in a strengths-based manner and understand the importance of "meeting clients where they are.” Must have a desire to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment on a new, growing project. Customer service experience is preferred. Knowledge of community-based resources throughout New York City, and especially Staten Island, is preferred. Candidates must have the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally-competent manner. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues. Candidates must be willing to work productively with a variety of justice system personnel and partner agencies, such as the NYPD. Candidates must be open to constructive engagement with other professionals who have differing and, at times, competing perspectives.
