The NY Legal Education Opportunity Program (NY LEO)

Another great opportunity

The New York Legal Education Opportunity Program (NY LEO) is designed to assist minority, low-income and economically disadvantaged students in acquiring the skills necessary to succeed in law school.  The program is seeking applicants who are New York residents, who will have received their undergraduate degrees by June 2017 and who have been accepted by or have an application pending at a law school in New York State.

NY LEO is an intensive six-week summer program offered by the New York State Judicial Institute from June 4-July 14, 2017. The program introduces students to first year law school courses and provides a mentoring program. NY LEO provides students, free of charge, with course materials, text books, housing, a meal plan, and access to the libraries and computer facilities of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University.

Two Great Opportunities: LSAT and Law School Prep.

Two great opportunities for students considering law school

(1) The Friends of Metropolitan Black Bar Association, NYC, Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) Prep Scholarship:

The Friends of the MBBA (the charitable arm of the MBBA) is pleased to announce its Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) Prep Scholarship.  The Friends of the MBBA provides financial scholarships to promote greater diversity within the profession and to help future leaders of the profession afford a legal education.  The purpose of the LSAT Prep Scholarship is to cover the costs for preparatory courses for the LSAT. 

To be eligible to receive the scholarship students must be permanent residents of New York City, registered for an upcoming LSAT within the 2016-2017 test administration cycle and submit a statement (750 words or less) on why "Black Lawyers Matter." All application materials must be received by January 31, 2017 and emailed to scholarship@mbbanyc.org. (2) The Brooklyn Legal Pipeline Initiative

The Brooklyn Legal Pipeline Initiative (BLPI) is designed to give diverse students who live or attend college in Brooklyn direct instruction on how to successfully apply to and fund a law school education. Selected students will attend five (5) two-hour classroom sessions (5:30 - 7:30pm, once a month) at the Brooklyn Bar Association’s landmark building located at 123 Remsen Street in downtown Brooklyn. 

This program is co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association (BWBA), The Defense Association of New York (DANY) and the Brooklyn Bar Association (BBA).

Program Class Schedule:

January 30, 2017: The Legal Profession
 (What is a lawyer? What do they do?) – A panel discussion with judges and attorneys describing the areas in which they practice.

February 27, 2017: Applying to Law School – Guided question and answer session with a college career counselor and a law school admissions officer.  This will include information on course selection, time management, writing skills, the LSAT’s, and paying for law school.

March 27, 2017: Networking and Mentoring – Each participant will be paired with an Attorney Mentor. This session will also focus on developing a resume and cover letter.

April 24, 2017: Internships, Interview Skills, & Professionalism.

May 22, 2017: Mock Interviews - Each participant will participate in simulated interviews and will receive immediate constructive feedback.

June – August 2017: Summer Internship Program 

Participants who attend all sessions will be offered an opportunity to obtain a non-paying summer internship. Please note that stipends may be available to students in order to defray certain transportation and ancillary costs associated with the internships.
